Pilobolus is an innovative dance company founded in 1971 at Dartmouth College by Moses Pendleton, Jonathan Wolken, Alison Chase, and others. Its dances, which have been developed collectively, typically involve gymnastics, group "structures," and overt and implied humor. Pilobolus' signature is the entangling of bodies, they form something that looks like a living sculpture. They called this "The Totem."
The performers employ the laws of physics to come up with positions that seems impossible. In one example, a man is supporting the weight of three people. They create movements that are hard to categorize. You're not going to see "Swan Lake" at a Pilobolus performance. Most dance that is seen today is overtly or somewhat feminine, But Pilobolus is not like that.

Pilobolus has a repertoire of 85 original works, with styles ranging from playful to intense to gravity defying. But it's definitely not your typical average dance company. After all, what typical dance company would name itself after a fungus? When it was first introduced as a class at the Dartmouth College, many of the guys saw the opportunity as an chance to get an easy A grade. They innovated the style to hanging on to each other, just to give physical and mental support to each other during the dance routine as performing alone was a little nerving for many participants. They named this dance Pilobolus – and videotaped it at a showcase for student dances. After that there was no looking back.
Pilobolus is a tax-exempt, not-for-profit corporation, supported in part by funds from the Connecticut Commission on Culture and Tourism, by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts which believes that a great nation deserves great art, and by grants from Altria Group, Inc., The J. Walton Bissell Foundation, The Connecticut Community Foundation, The Cordelia Corporation, Dartmouth College, The Dyson Foundation and other such organizations. MetLife Foundation is the official tour sponsor of Pilobolus Dance Theater.
