The Nutcracker Ballet is based on the story "The Nutcracker and the King of Mice" written by E.T.A. Hoffman. Although what is seen on the stage today is different in detail from the original story, the basic plot remains the same; The story of a young German girl who dreams of a Nutcracker Prince and a fierce battle against a Mouse King with seven heads.

The curtain rises on the town of Nuremburg, Germany. The year is 1830. Children are playing outside the shop of Herr Drosselmeyer, a clock and doll maker who is known to have mysterious and magical powers. He is putting the finishing touches on the special dolls that he will present to his niece Clara later that evening. Meanwhile, family and friends have gathered at the home of Doctor and Frau Stahlbaum for a party to celebrate the holiday season. They watch the lighting of the Christmas tree, and the children excitedly open their presents. Herr Drosselmeyer arrives and surprises Clara and the other children with magic tricks an d special gifts. Life-size dolls dance to everyone's delight. Drosselmeyer then presents Clara with an unusual gift, a nutcracker doll. Clara's younger brother Fritz is jealous. He grabs the nutcracker and breaks it. Drosselmeyer magically repairs the broken nutcracker and returns it to the appreciative Clara. After the party is over and everyone in the house is in bed, Clara tiptoes back to the living room t o check on her nutcracker. Holding him, she sits down in a cozy chair and begins to dream. At the stroke of midnight, Drosselmeyer reappears, using his magical powers to transform the room. Clara watches in awe as the Christmas tree grows bigger. The toys beneath it are now as tall as she is. Suddenly, a band of mice enter the room, looking menacing.
