The great writer Moliere entered the world on Jan 15, 1622. He completed his early education at the college de Clermont, and became a promising scholar of Latin and Greek. Although he attained the law degree in 1642, he refused to join both the legal profession and his father's business. He found his calling in acting and in the year 1643 he started an acting troupe, The Illustre Theatre which was in collaboration with the Bejart family. He stayed with the troupe for 12 years wherein he enhanced his skills as an actor, director, administrator and playwright. The troupe gained their rightful glory in 1658 when they performed before King Louis XIV. The king's brother became Molière's patron and later Molière and his colleagues were given the biggest honour of becoming official providers of entertainment to the Sun king himself.
With the play "The Precious Maidens Ridiculed" written in 1659, he rightfully assumed the title of the most accomplished comic playwright of the era. Theatre was the most predominant means of entertainment in the 17th century. The main forms of theatre were the early baroque, the formal neoclassical tragedies of Mairet, Rotrou, du Ryer, Pierre and Thomas Corneille. Molière strongly believed that comedy was not just a form of light entertainment but it was a serious form of art through which he could express their views and beliefs.
