Mikhail Nikolaevitch Baryshnikov is a pioneer in the field of dance, choreography and acting. A dancer of Russian origin, he is often referred to as the world's greatest living male ballet dancer. He was born on January 28, 1948 in Riga in the Latvian Soviet Socialist Republic of the Soviet Union. Even as a child he had a fascination for ballet. His mother who was also fond of ballet, enrolled him in the School of the Theatre Opera Ballet in Riga in 1960. It was then that he decided to take up dance as a career.
After completing his studies in 1996, he joined Leningrad's Kirov Ballet. Breaking all traditions, he did not join corps de ballet, instead he launched himself professionally as a solo performer in Giselle. He tasted success for the first time when he won a gold medal at the Varna, Bulgaria, international ballet competition. When he returned to Leningrad, he continued his journey on the road to success. Only two yars after his debut, he was offered his first leading role in Oleg Vinograd's "Gorianka". The role had been written keepingin mind Barshnikov. He was also given the prestigious gold medal at the first international ballet competition in Moscow and he was also bestowed with the prestigious Nijinsky Award.
He created history as he became the youngest dancer ever to receive the State Award for Merit of the U.S.S.R. While in Russia, he partnered with Irina Kolpakova, one of the greatest legends in the field of ballet. He performed in ballets like Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker, Giselle, Flames of Paris and Don Quixote. In the hit opera Creation of the World in 1971, Baryshnikov essayed the role of Adam to Kolpakova's Eve. During these years his desire to work with more Western choreographers increased coupled with his fear of the decline of the Kirov Ballet.
1974 to 1979 marked another chapter in his story of success where he was the lead dancer with the American Ballet Theatre. He also got the opportunity to work with the New York City Ballet, with one of the greatest ballet dancers, George Balanchine. Apart from performing in theatres, he was also on a world tour for fifteen months. He was being offered roles created specially for him like roles in "Opus", "Rhapsody" and the hit opera "Other Dances" with Natalia Makarova. He came back to the American Ballet Theatre in 1980 as a dancer and artistic director. He successfully held that position for a decade. On July 3, 1986 he became a citizen of The United States. From 1990 to 2002, he was artistic director of the White Oak Dance Project which he co-founded with Mark Morris. Through this touring company, he travelled all around the world and showed his talent to the world.
