Memphis the Musical is the musical that pays homage to the world of R&B in African-American communities the 1950s before it went to the mainstream in the 1960s. This musical, written by Bon Jovi keyboardist David Bryan and famed-playwright Joe DiPietro is set to make the jump to Broadway after its long journey beginning in Beverly, Massachusetts in 2003. Memphis the Musical tickets are going to be released for the production at the Shubert Theatre for the Broadway run starting on October 19, 2009.
Behind the musical celebration of the music that influenced so many rockers over the next few decades is the story of DJ Huey Calhoun and his personal mission to make the music that resonated in African-American clubs hidden away in the night in his city of Memphis known throughout the rest the city and eventually, the country.
The musical follows DJ Huey Calhoun from his beginnings, as a man driven by purpose, but lacking the personal touch to achieve it by any other means than force. He is young man with rough edges that alienate everyone in his life, from his overtly racist mother to the very group of musicians he is trying to announce to the rest of the country. Memphis the Musical borrows from movies and musicals like Dream Girls and Hair, but remain original theater tickets as DJ Huey refuses to apologize for his personality.
Along the way, Huey falls in love. The object of his affection is the African-American singer belting tunes in the opening scene as he awkwardly enters the Memphis night club. He and the singer, Felicia Farrell, soon begin a romance confused by the race rules that permeated society and the seedy expectations in the music industry. Memphis the Musical follows along as they must hide their affection from both worlds. In this regard, Memphis tickets are something familiar to theater goers.
