The shows follows the movie and books with some changes, however one is able to be reminded of the wonderful memories from their past experiences with Marry Poppins and Bert. George and Winifred Banks are the parents of two unruly children, Jane and Michael. The departure of their most current Nanny, prompts the children to write their own advertisement for a new one. On their first outing with Mary, the children are introduced to the loveable Bert. The children are a bit put off by his dirty and ragged appearance but Mary teaches them their first lesson, looking at the person and not appearances. The parents have troubles of their own, with Mrs. Banks feeling that she is disappointing her children and Mr. Banks making poor choices at work. The parents frustrations are being taken out on the children and in turn making the children react very poorly. Mary decides to leave the children to teach them a lesson. The first act is full of some of the most famous songs from Mary Poppins including "Chim Chim Cher –ee"," A Spoonful of Sugar" and " "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious"
Act II continues with the stress in the Banks family. Mrs. Banks makes a failed attempt to find a new nanny. She thinks she is doing a good thing by bringing Mr. Banks childhood nanny into the house. Instead of making things better for the family she makes them worse. The new nanny is a tyrant, the exact opposite of Mary Poppins and not only is this difficult on her children is brings back terrible childhood memories for her husband. The children run to find their new friend Bert and they also find Mary Poppins. The children are overjoyed and promise they will be good. The children and Mary Poppins head home and after a confrontation between the old nanny and Mary Poppins the old nanny leaves the house to everyone's relief.
Good fortune is now in store for the Banks family. Good things happen at the bank for Mr. Banks and he and his wife become close again. They then head home and the family rejoices in their good fortune and all is good and calm in the Banks household. Based on this Mary Poppins feels her work with the family is done and goes on her way, this time with the blessing of the children.

The musical production of Mary Poppins is based on the Disney movie of the same title and the children's book series also titled, Mary Poppins. The original film came out in 1964 and starred Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke. The music and lyrics were written by the amazing Sherman Brothers, who wrote the music for the original movie. The Sherman Brothers have written more musical scores for motion pictures then any other songwriting team. Some of there works include writing music for Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, The Aristocats, The Jungle Book and Bedknobs and Broomsticks.
The first stage production of Mary Poppins opened in London, and had it's longest run at the Prince Edward Theatre, where is ran from December 15, 2004 to January 12 , 2008. The Broadway production opened in 2006 at the New Amsterdam Theater. Here the original Bert from London starred next to Ashley Brown who plays Mary.
Mary Poppins is scheduled for a US tour starting March 2009 and traveling to such places as The Cadillac Palace Theater in Chicago, The Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles, The Fox Theatre in St. Louis and many more. A UK tour is also planned starting in the summer of 2008.
