Show Biography - Man Of La Mancha
|
Dale Wasserman earlier wrote the Man of La Mancha, a non-musical teleplay for the Dupont Show of the Month program of CBS. But a new title " I, Don Quixote" was given to it as The Dupont Corporation did not like the original title as they felt the audience won't be able to make out what La Mancha actually is, in the symbolic and geographical sense. The play was able to garner critical acclaim after being telecasted. After years being broadcasted on the the television the director Albert Marre contacted Wasserman and asked him for transforming the play in a musical as earlier it was unsuccessfully optioned as a non-musical play of Broadway. In 1964 Man of La Mancha premiered in Connecticut at the Goodspeed Opera House. Rex Harrison was original choice for the play but later Michael Redgrave was considered for the role.
On 22nd November,1965 the play was performed at the Broadway. Richard Kiley played the main role of Cervantes and Quixote. He won the Tony Award for the role. Man of La Mancha has been played for five times in Broadway. Between 1965 to 1971 it had about 2,328 performances with Hal Holbrook, John Cullum, Lloyd Bridges and José Ferrer playing the roles. It was revived in 1972, 1977 with Richard Kiley as Cervantes and Quixote. In 1992 Cervantes and Quixote was played by Raúl Juliá and in the 2002 revival Brian Stokes Mitchell was seen as Cervantes and Quixote.
