In this play Tracy Letts, known for two of his early plays - Killer Joe and Bug, explores the strange course a believer's soul would pursue when he dramatically loses faith in God. This play was a Pulitzer Prize finalist but it is yet to scale the commercial heights his earlier plays did. The play unfolds as the initial scenes narrate the methodical life of Ken Carpenter, an insurance sales agent. His life is very monotonous and revolves around a car, a church pew, a cafeteria table and a TV show, in addition to the visits to a nursing home to see his ailing mother Cammi. This pattern continues in the life of Ken until a life-changing moment he experiences. In the middle of a calm night, he is heard sobbing in the bathroom but not for a common reason such as an illness or a domestic accident. It turns out to be something that would become a turning point of his life - he awakens to the fact that he no longer believes in God, who until then, was supposed to have provided him with everything he wanted in his life. Nancy (his wife) and their oldest daughter Ashley (who also works with Ken in his insurance business) are thoroughly shocked by this discovery. Very distressed, they approach the Reverend who suggests that Ken had a separation from Nancy and the family members, and tried to rediscover his faith back in the institution of God. Accepting the same, Ken decides that a stint at London would make that happen. He flies across the Atlantic and in the plane encounters a seductress Pat who tries only in vein to arouse any interest in his disquieted soul.
Arriving at London, he strikes a bonding with the barkeep Tamyra, who befriends Ken because of the belief that Yanks are fat tippers. A warm friendship develops and that is extended to Harry, who is Tamyra's flat mate. The three of them bond very well as Ken continues to explore the possibilities of rediscovering his lost faith. Back in Nebraska, every one except Ken's wife loses faith in Ken's success and comes to a decision that he had deserted the family. Only Nancy's persistent soul believes in Ken's homecoming. But as time passes by, she involves herself with the Reverend's randy father.

Man from Nebraska is funny, moving and spiritual. Tracy touches upon the complex questions of spirituality very well thereby arousing the yearnings of the common man in such a matter. However, the play has some down sides. It is not very easy to reckon with the fact that Ken would spend so much time with condescending Tamyra and hopeless Harry while on a soul-searching mission. There is also a Pinteresque pattern of silence in the scenes when the husband and wife are very reticent and a good length of time passes by with none of them uttering even a word. On the very positive side, the screenplay and dialogues are natural and matched by the performances of the artists. The characters of Ken and his wife Nancy are very strong and intriguing. Over all, it is yet another enjoyable play by the talented Letts. It would certainly be a treat to those who buy the play's tickets.
