In the first act a marriage is taking place between Lieutenant B.F. Pinkerton, of the US navy and Cio-Cio-San or Madame Butterfly who is a 15-year-old Japanese geisha. The marriage was arranged by a matchmaker Goro who also a rent a little home for the couple to live in. Sharpless who is an American consul asks Pinkerton to not to marry the girl as she believes that marriage is binding. But the bride does not listen to him and Cio-Cio-San comes there with her geisha friends. For getting married to Pinkerton, Cio has given up the faith of her ancestors and now her people will never accept her back. Just when the marriage was signed and when the guests are drinking a toast a Buddhist monk comes there cursing her for giving up her ancestor faith and asks her friends to leave her. Pinkerton dashes all the guests and consoles her wife and they start their happy married life.
Act two is set three years later. Te tour duty of Pinkerton is over and goes back to United States. Before leaving he promises his wife to come back again. Suzuki who is the faithful servant of Butterfly feels that he has left them forever. Sharpless get a letter from Pinkerton informing him that he has married an American woman.
