Gurney, born on November 1, 1930, an alumnus of Williams College and the Yale School of Drama, began writing plays while teaching humanities at MIT. After writing plays like 'Scenes from American Life' and 'The Middle Ages,' he achieved major success with 'The Dining Room' and began writing full-time. However, it was the creatively authored 'Love Letters' that brought him fame and accolades from all directions. The play has firmly established him as one of the best playwrights of contemporary times. The plot and basic presentation of the play are quite plain. The play's two characters - Andrew Makepeace Ladd III, a grave, devoted lawyer and Melissa Gardner, an easygoing artist read aloud the letters they happen to have written to each other during the long years they have been busy pursuing their individual lives and careers. The contents of these letters that unfold one by one enlighten the audience about the characters' WASP upbringing, relationships, political aspirations and artistic ambitions.
