J.O.B. the Hip-Hopera is a remake of an off-off-Broadway production by the Montréal-based duad, which features the same characters and concept but with just the two rappers and their platform. The original story gos like this. "In the story of Job, the explanation for why bad things happen to good people is because God – in this capricious, maniacal way – makes a bet with Satan about Job's faith," says Sable. He and Batalion use an L.A. record company as the backdrop for a modern version of the tale, featuring record executive J. Hoover (Jehovah) and Vice President of Finance Lou Sapphire (Lucifer), both testing the loyalties of lowly middle executive Job Lowe (Joe Blow). They represent Lou Sapphire as artful, trying to get J. Hoover to ruin Joe Blow's life for his own delight. "[Sapphire] is pulling back the curtain to reveal the true nature of God," says Sable. There is even a dance scene in which Sapphire acts as puppeteer, using J. Hoover as his puppet.
