Idomeneo is an Italian opera written by great composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The libretto for the opera was adapted by Giambattista Varesco from a French text written by Antoine Danchet. This libretto was set to music by André Campra as Idoménée in 1712. Mozart and Varesco were accredited in 1780 by Karl Theodor, Elector of Bavaria for a court carnival.
The opera was first premiered at the Cuvilliés Theater of the Residenz in Munich on January 29, 1781. Mozart wrote this opera when he was 24 which became Mozart's first mature opera seria, and with this work he demonstrated his command on orchestral color, accompanied recitatives, and musical line. In certain aspects like the choirs, however, this opera is still considered as an experimental drama that results more in a series of sets than in a well developed plot. Mozart also had arguments with the mediocre author of the libretto for making large cuts and changes.
Nowadays, Idomeneo has become a part of the standard operatic repertoire. It is frequently performed and have many recordings done till date. The opera is headlining the news recently as on September 26, 2006, Berlin's Deutsche Opera declared the cancellation of four performances of the opera scheduled for November 2006, mentioning concerns that the production's depictions of a severed head of the Islamic prophet Muhammad lifted an "incalculable security risk." "To avoid endangering its audience and employees, the management has decided against repeating 'Idomeneo' in November 2006," the opera house said in a press release.

The cancellation evoked a great deal of argument in Europe on the issue of self censorship and the nature of free speech. On September 27, 2006, Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel presented her views, "I think the cancellation was a mistake. I think self-censorship does not help us against people who want to practice violence in the name of Islam ... It makes no sense to retreat." Interior Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble, after attending a government-sponsored conference with Muslim representatives held independently of the incident told reporters that "[t]o send a signal, we could all go to the performance together," and the Muslim representatives agreed that the performance should not be off.
It is important to note that the cut off heads are a recent 'addition' by director Neuenfels to the original, 225-year-old opera, which was performed last by the company in March 2004.
Anthony Tommasini from NY Times says on his review of Idomeneo, "Mozart was a pragmatic showman, willing to tailor his theater pieces to individual singers in each production, and it was fine for Mr. Domingo to sing the simplified aria on stage, as he did at the Met, where his presence and vocal charisma carried the day. But this is a permanent document, and in a version otherwise so faithful and stylistically informed, it is a major compromise not to have the aria as Mozart conceived it."
