H.M.S. Pinafore is one of the most loved comic opera played in New York. This opera is played in two acts, with music by Arthur Sullivan and libretto by W. S. Gilbert. Drawing on many of his previous "bab ballad" poems, Gilbert pervaded H.M.S. Pinafore with hilarity and silliness to spare. The opera's docile satire plays and builds on a theme which has been introduced in "The Sorcerer", love among members of different social classes. The opera also intrudes wonderful fun at the Royal Navy and, in themes to be reprized in the later operas, parliamentary politics and the rise of incompetent people to positions of authority. The title itself reveals the hilarious nature of the opera as it combines the name of a little girl's garment, pinafore, with the symbol of a naval war ship.

Though this girl is engaged to the upper-class First Lord of the Admiralty, the government official in charge of the Royal Navy, she continues to be loyal to her beloved sailor. As Gilbert and Sullivan operas are famous for a sudden twist in story, this opera is not spared and a surprise twist changes everything dramatically near the end of the story.
Distressed from excessive piracy of Pinafore in the United States, Gilbert and Sullivan made a special effort to claim American rights for their next work, "The Pirates of Penzance", by making an official premiere in New York.
Pinafore remains one of Gilbert and Sullivan's most famous and well acclaimed works, possibly because of its amazing infectious tunes and mostly well-constructed libretto. On its First Night Opening the opera received rave reviews like Paper Standard said, "So perfect a quarter-deck as that of H.M.S. Pinafore has assuredly never been put upon the stage. Every block and rope to the minutest detail is in its place, in fact it is an exact model of what it represents; and thanks no doubt to the untiring diligence of the author the piece is admirably represented all round. Here we fid that marvel of marvels, a chorus that acts, and adds to the reality of the illusion.". The views of Era were, "The curtain fell amidst enthusiastic applause and Messrs. Gilbert and Sullivan and the principal performers were called to the footlights, and greeted most heartily, a compliment most thoroughly deserved, for the success of the comic opera and the genuine enjoyment the audience had derived from it was unquestionable.
