Though this girl is engaged to the upper-class First Lord of the Admiralty, the government official in charge of the Royal Navy, she continues to be loyal to her beloved sailor. As Gilbert and Sullivan operas are famous for a sudden twist in story, this opera is not spared and a surprise twist changes everything dramatically near the end of the story.
Distressed from excessive piracy of Pinafore in the United States, Gilbert and Sullivan made a special effort to claim American rights for their next work, "The Pirates of Penzance", by making an official premiere in New York.
Pinafore remains one of Gilbert and Sullivan's most famous and well acclaimed works, possibly because of its amazing infectious tunes and mostly well-constructed libretto.
