Historians consider him to be the "last of the big city bosses". In 1960, he played a major role in the history of the Democratic Party, by supporting John F. Kennedy and later supporting Hubert H. Humphery in 1968. He was nationally famous as an important Irish Catholic leader. Daley served as Chairman of the Cook Country Democratic Central Committee from 1953. It was in 1955, when he became the mayor of Chicago, retaining both the positions until his death in 1976. He was the champion of the Catholic ethnics but was greatly criticized by the African Americans as insensitive to their needs. At the same time he is remembered for his efforts to avoid the decline that some other "rust belt" cities experienced during the same period.
Although Daley was a lifelong Democrat, he was first elected to the Illinois legislature as a Republican. In 1955, first elected as mayor, Daley elected to that office six times. During his administration, Daley ruled the city with an iron hand and dominated the political arena. In August of 1968, Democratic National Convention was held in Chicago with the in intentions of showcasing Daley's achievements to national Democratic and the new media but the proceedings instead garnered notoriety for the mayor and city. In 1972, George McGovern a Democratic nominee, replaced Daley with Jesse Jackson and excluded him from the Democratic National Convention. The differences were latter amended when McGovern included Daley loyalist Sargent Shriver on his tickets.

Daley suffered a major heart attack on December 20, 1976 and died at the age of 74. Daley is famously known by Chicagoans as "Da Mare", "Hizzoner, and "The Man on Five". Since his death and subsequent election of son Richard as mayor in 1989, the first mayor Daley has become "Boss Daley", "Old Man Daley", or "Daley Senior".
