Show Biography - Hair

The story of Hair revolved around a group of people active in political scene having long hair. The group is the tribe known as Hippies of the Age of Aquarius. The group is against mobilization for the Vietnam War. The characters in the show have been named Jeanie, Claude, Sheila, Dionne, Woof, Hud, and Crissy. Berger and Claude are friends. They are fighting against draft notice of Claude. Berger and Claude are loved by Sheila. But Sheila is so engrossed in her political career that there is no personal time for her to express her feelings. Finally the battle is lost by the two friends. Claude feels that he cannot live a tribe life. He goes to Vietnam.
The original cast in New York constituted of actors like Gerome Ragni, Kim Milford, James Rado, Melba Moore, Shelley Plimpton, Diane Keaton and Paul Jabara. At Los Angeles the cast of Hair saw Doby Gray, Ben Vereen, James Rado, Meat Loaf, Ted Neeley, Gerome Ragni, Jobriath Salisbury, Jerry Combs , Jennifer Warren , Dolores Hall, Willie Weatherly, Susan Morse, Tata Vega, and Abigail Haines.
On 20th September, 200 4 in New York City at the New Amsterdam Theater a special benefit performance of Hiar was played. The cast of in New York included the names of RuPaul, Liz Callaway, Shoshana Bean, JM J. Bullock, Ana Gasteyer, Gavin Creel, Annie Golden, Jai Rodriguez, Harvey Fierstein, Michael McKean, Jennifer Hudson and more cast members.
In the early years of 1990s Hair was not played that frequently. However in 1992 Hair opened in Australia with a successful performance. In this production Hair was performed with old songs being played with new sound. In 1993 Hair had a big revival played in London at Old Vic. In Vienna there was another big opening of Hair in 2001. the musical was very successful.
Hair has also been adapted in a movie and was released in 1979. The movie version starred by John Savage, Beverly D'Angelo and Treat Williams was directed by Miloš Forman.
Hair's latest successful production has been at the Hirschfeld Theatre on Broadway. The production has been selling Hair tickets at a surprising rate considering the well-noted troubles of many Broadway shows. The revival continues a long history of well produced reincarnations of the original, with a message that remains as relevant today as it was when the show debuted in 1967.
