Giulio Cesare is performed in three acts. The characters in the opera are the Romans being Gaius Julius Caesar, Curio, Cornelia, wife of Pompeius, her son Sextus Pompeius. The Egyptians in the show are queen of Egypt Cleopatra, her brother Ptolemy, the counsel and Egyptian general Achillas, Nirenus the confident of Cleopatra along with other warriors, slaves, important and Romans and maids of Cleopatra. The story of Giulio Cesare is about a three way struggle for gaining control over Egypt. The struggle involves Caesar, Ptolemy and Cleopatra. Julius Caesar who had just won a battle over hie enemy Pompeius who goes to Egypt. In order to please Caesar, people of Egypt murder Pompeius much to the dismay of his wife Cornelia and his son, Sextus. While Cleopatra who wants to defeat her brother Ptolemy with the help Caesar plans to seduce Caesar through her beauty. Ceasar pledges his loyalty to Cleopatra. Sextus on the other hand to avenge the murder of his father challenges Ptolemy for a fight. Sextus defeats and kills Ptolemy and Cleopatra becomes the Queen of Egypt. The show has variety of music as angry, plaintive, amorous and soothing. No doubt it is the greatest work of Handel.
