The show was conceived by Jerry Bock, Sheldon Harnick, and Joseph Stein, based on the short story Teyve and his Daughters by Sholem Aleichem and influenced by Marc Chagall's surrealist paintings. The musical, originally entitled Teyve, tells the story of Teyve the Milkman, his five daughters, their choices for husbands, and his desire to maintain family and religious tradition. Fiddler on the Roof also tells the story of Tevye and other Jews trying to stay in the village while avoiding persecution from the Czar, who has recently ordered all Jews to leave.
