Electra is Greek tragic play written more than 2000 years ago by Sophocles. It is a tale of passion and murder, a story of revenge by a daughter against murders of her father. Her father is murdered by none other by her own mother. Electra is awaiting homecoming of her long-exiled brother. She hopes to convince her brother for avenging the death of their father. King Agamemnon returned with Cassandra, his new concubine from Trojan War. On his return his wife Clytemnestra with his lover Aegisthus kills him. Murder is justified by Clytemnestra as Agamemnon had sacrificed their daughter Iphigeneia. While Electra saves her infant bother Orestes from Clytemnestra. She sends her brother to Strophius of Phocis. Play starts years later after Orestes returns with a revenge plan. He comes with his friend Pylades who is son of Strophius and an old attendant of Orestes who took him to Strophius from Electra. They hatch a plan about announcing death of Orestes and his remains in a urn are being brought by two men. Actually these two men are Pylades and Orestes. Electra expresses her grief over her father's death. Electra has a heated argument with her sister Chrysothemis for her settlement with murdered of their father and argues with her mother regrading his murder. Electra now only sees ray of hope for avenging his father's death by brother. Clytemnestra feels very relived after hearing news of Orestes's death. But on other hand Electra is very shocked and depressed to hear it. Chrysothemis comes and says Orestes has returned after seeing some offering at Agamemnon's tomb. But Electra feels that his brother in no more now. She then comes with a plan to kill Aegisthus. But Chrysothemis denies to help her on grounds of it impracticality.

Orestes gives the urn to her who his deeply hurt by her brother's death unaware of the fact that her brother none other than man who gives her the ashes. But Orestes comes to know the truth and reveals his true identity to Electra. After knowing the truth Electra is extremely happy. Both brothers and sisters are so excited they almost blow his cover until paedagogus comes and warns them. Orestes and Pylades then go in house and kill his mother. When Aegisthus comes back home they place her body under a sheet and say to Aegisthus that it is the body of Orestes. As Aegisthus lifts the sheet to see who it is Orestes tells him who he is. They kill Aegisthus at same place where father of Orestes, Agamemnon was killed. This marks end of play before news of death of Aegisthus is proclaimed.
Electra was written by Sophocles. But date of play is still not known. But according to some scholars play was written towards end of his career due to various similarities in style with Oedipus at Colonus (401 BC) and Philoctetes (409 BC).
