This play was the most suceesful Rostand work, which concentrates on Cyrano de Bergerac's love for a beautiful woman named Roxane for whom he was ready to entice on the behalf of a more handsome and lovable, but less fluent, friend named as Christian de Neuvillette with whom Roxane already is in love.
This play has been translated into many languages as well as performed many times. It also has been the subject of many films. In 1950 a film starring hero José Ferrer also had this as a theme for which Ferrer won an Academy Award.
This play revolves around Cyrano de Bergerac, Christian de Neuvillette and Roxane. In short in this play bergerac serves as a cadet in french army who is a strong willed man. He is also an exellent poet and musician. But because of his extremely large nose he becomes victim of his own self doubt and this prevents him from expressing his love for his cousin Roxane. At the time he is debating whether to propose her or not, she tells him that she loves Christian de Neuvillette who is also a cadet in the same regiment. He also gets to know that Christian also loves her but he doesn't know how to talk to women. Cyrano helps Christian with the type of outstanding verse that he has. He also writes romantic letters on his behalf him. But unfortunately war breaks down in arras and Christian dies in that war. No one is then able to know who has written those letters and after fifteen years from that day roxane asks him to read that letter but sees that cyrano is reading letter from his memory and has written all the letters himself. She then got to know how much he loved her.
