The book was first published in the year 1952. A beautiful story that tells the story of a spider whose name is Charlotte and her friendship with a pig named Wilbur. Fern Arable is a eight-year-old girl whose father is a butcher by profession. Once she saw her father was going to slaughter a small pig, she plead with her father not to kill the animal. Her father complies with her request and he gave the pig to her. She brings back the pig and names him Wilbur. With the passage of time, she takes great care of the pig and tends to to him just like a mother, until he grows up and later moves to Mr. Zuckerman's barn. A spider named Charlotte lives near the door of the pen of Wilbur. They become fast friends. She then weaves words describing the pig in her web so as to convince the Zuckerman family that Wilbur is so special that he can never be killed for food, thus saving Wilbur's life. At the end of the story, we find that Charlotte dies.

The animated feature was then distributed in many theaters by Paramount Pictures the following year and is one of only two Hanna-Barbera features that was not based upon one of their television cartoons, the other one Heidi's Song (1982) . Both of them turned to be a huge hit and was also critically acclaimed . It has also been a commercial success.
