Cat on a Hot Tin Roof explores the decaying structure behind the Southern aristocracy and its world of lies and ulterior motives. In a world of reputation, bravado and false intimacy, Brick Pollitt is the broken football hero reeling from the suicide of his close friend, Skip, Maggie "The Cat" is working hard to keep away from the poverty that haunted her childhood, and the rest of the Pollitt family is hiding the terminal cancer that will take the family patriarch, "Big Daddy" Pollitt, before his next birthday.
The lies in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof hide the financial and social motives on Big Daddy's birthday. The Pollitt relatives have gathered for what will be his last birthday to fight for position in his will, but Brick remains at the wayside with a tumbler in hand torn apart by his friend's death. His wife is frustrated with Brick's absence from the manipulative gave being played out by the rest of the family in Cat on a Tin Roof. The Tennessee Williams play, loosely based on one of his short stories, came to the stage in 1955 and came away with several Tony nominations and made its appearance on silver screen in 1958, coming away with several Academy Award nominations.
The theme focused on lies but the social fabric of the original work explored the sexism and attitudes toward sexuality in the Southern culture of machismo and reputation. Big Daddy is himself a tyrant of sorts, but the family grovels for the riches that will be fall from his death bed. The production never failed to sell tickets and a number of renditions of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof have been produced around the world and for different mediums.
