Carl Rosa Opera Company was established by Carl August Nicholas Rosa, a German-born violinist. He was born Karl August Nikolaus Rose on 22 March 1842 in Hamburg Germany. He first studied at the Conservatorium at Leipzig and later on went to Paris to study further. In 1866 he went to London to perform as a soloist at the Crystal Palace. Eventually he along with Bateman set off on a tour of America where he met the popular singer, Madame Parepa. He married her in 1867 and his wife's success encouraged Rosa to establish the ‘Parepa Rosa English Opera Company' in New York and toured through out America. In 1871, the couple returned to England and from there went to Egypt. In 1873 the couple established the Carl Rosa Opera Company and toured England and Ireland. A year later Parepa died in childbirth. In 1874 Rosa presented a second London season at the Lyceum Theatre, which eventually became a yearly event. Rosa guided the company for the next 15 years, under his leadership the company prospered and earned a good reputation.
In 1879 Alberto Randegger was appointed as the Musical Director and he served till 1885. The Carl Rosa Opera has metamorphosed into a national institution. The actions of the company have greatly determined the musical life of every town in the British Isles. The Carl Rosa Opera was the first company to produce Lohengrin, Aida, Carmen, La Boheme, Cavalleria Rusticana, Hansel and Gretel, Mignon, Manon, Tannhauser, Rienzi, Andrea Chenier, Othello and The Flying Dutchman in English.
The Opera survived the World Wars but faced numerous financial problems from which it emerged stronger and more determined.
In 1998, the Carl Rosa Opera became the ‘Carl Rosa Opera Limited' with the aim to offer premier quality productions of music theatre and opera at affordable prices.
