In 1971, Director Maxine Mahon took a step ahead and started recreating full-length classics. Associate Director, Charles Bennett too contributed towards the growth of the company. He contributed works that were based on San Diego's historical and Spanish roots as well as children's ballets. Apart from the masters the CBC dancers and teachers too have contributed greatly to make the collection rich. In 1972, the CBC's foundation was laid in the California Ballet School. Students from all across the country as well as the Globe take admission in this prestigious school.
In 1974, Marlene Jones and Douglas Hevenor from CBC took part in the Seventh International Ballet Competition in Varna, Bulgaria where Bennett got the second place for Albinoni Adagio. Mahon became the first American Dance instructor to be invited by the Romanian Government to teach, choreograph and lecture all over Romania. At the first Tokyo World Ballet Concourse, Jones and Hevenor were given special performance prizes. At the same event Bennett took home a gold medal. CBC also took part in contests in Varna, Bulgaria/'78, Jackson, Mississippi/'86, Helsinki, Finland/'91 and Jackson, Mississippi/'94. CBC made a history of sorts when Stanislav Issaev from the Moscow Classical Ballet came in as guest performer in ‘86-'87. Since then many Russian stars have come and performed with CBC.
The multi-faceted California Ballet Company of San Diego has been thriving and flourishing because of the dream and resolve of its spirited founder Maxine Mahon and the fire, which she passed on to her associates, that still continues.
