Since 1987, Caillou books were published by Les Editions Chouette. In the year 1998, almost 65 episodes of Caillou, was aired for almost 5-minute throughout Canada and as well in some other selected markets through out the world. The show became very popular and in the year 2000, the timings for the show was increased to almost 40 30-minute. These new show contained a mixture of the 5-minute episodes and also included some brand new stories, songs, real kids segment and puppets. In the year 2003, the show was formulated and it contained all-new stories, and it contained 16 30-minute episodes. The show continued for nother three seasons right from the year 2004 till 2006. A movie was also made and was termed as "Caillou's Holiday Movie" and was released direct-to-DVD and video in the year 2003.

In the year 2006, new episodes for the show were premiered. Caillou have received innumerable awards, such as Bronze World Medal from the New York Festivals. The original book of Caillou was written in French, but due to its popularity it was translated to English. The show was aired in the French-speaking region of Quebec, Canada and was later translated into English to satisfy the desires of children in other parts of the world.

The characters of "Caillou" are Caillou the pivotal character of the show. The toddler is four years old and is a baldy, inquisitive, noisy and is known to throw tantrums. Then comes Doris mother of Caillou, who is an accountant by profession. She is a loving wife and a very caring mother, who takes great pains to explain things to her son when it becomes too difficult for him to understand. Boris is the father of Caillou, though a clumsy fellow, he loves his wife dearly and is even a good father. Next character is Rosie (French name: Mousseline) younger sister of Caillou, who is a loving but mischievous sister of Caillou. She is talkative also. Grandma, is grandmother of Caillou, who is an artistic and creative woman who always finds out solutions to Caillou's problems, in a creative way. Grandpa is the grandfather of Caillou, who keeps Caillou busy with outdoor activities and long walks.

The other characters of the show are the friends of Caillou who resides in the neighbourhood. They are Mr. Hinkle (French name: Monsieur Lajoie), Leo Martin, Clementine, Sarah, André, Julie, Mr. Washington, Jason, Jeffrey.

Caillou is a story about a small by whose name was Caillou and who lives with his parents, his two year old little sister, Rosie, Gilbert, his cat and his stuffed animals. The story was made into an animated cartoon series also, in the year 1998 and it became very popular among the small children. The story of Caillou was actually written by Christine L'Heureux, and was compiled into a book. The illustrator for the book was Hélène Desputeaux. The story is actually related by a teacher, who is also the narrator of the show, who tells the story to her students.

'Caillou' is actually a French word, which means "pebble" or "stone", and sometimes can also be used to mean "bald head".
