Broadway Bound
Broadway Bound tickets are tickets to see the semi-autobiographical story of Neil Simon as he and his brother try and break into the world of comedy that would treat them so well throughout the rest of their adult life. The play tells the story of Eugene and Stanley Jerome after World War II as they must find some sort of balance between career and family.
The brothers have begun writing a radio comedy show. They naturally draw inspiration from their family life, and face the disappointing wrath of their father when he sees too many parallels between the characters and his family. The story takes a darker turn in Broadway Bound as the family relationships are strained by the actions the very father that objects so much to his sons portrayal of the family on the radio.
The father, Jack, has been cheating on his wife, Kate. A separation is looming and the sons feel just betrayed as their father. The anger strains the relationships and finds its way into unrelated conversations that all come back to this betrayal of trust. The extended family, Kate's sister Blanche and the grandfather Ben, add moments of light hearted comedy that bring the story back from the brink of a full out family drama. In the end the two brothers appear Broadway bound as greater opportunities present themselves.
Broadway Bound first sold tickets in 1986 with a cast that included Jonathan Silverman as Eugene and Jason Alexander as his older brother Stanley. The drama-comedy would find great success on the stage, lasting a total of 756 performances. The play would win two Tony Awards in 1987, one for Linda Lavin's portrayal of the matriarch Kate and one for John Randolph's portrayal of the grandfather Ben, and be nominated for Best Play and Best Featured Actress.
