Blithe Spirit is a play written by Noel Coward in five days while he vacationing on the coast of Snowdonia in Wales. The play debuted in 1941 at the Manchester Opera House in June 1941 and moved to London's West End a month later, when it premiered at the Piccadilly Theatre on July 21. The play would sell tickets for 1,997 more performances as it moved from Piccadilly to St. James Theatre to the Duchess Theatre. Blithe Spirit held the record for most performances by a single production of a non-musical in the West End until Boeing Boeing surpassed it in the 1970s.
The play tells the humorous tale of author and writer Charles Condomine who awakens the ghost of his second wife after he invites clairvoyant Madame Arcati to his house in the English countryside to perform a séance. His deceased first wife, Elvira, awakens and begins to torment Charles and his second wife Ruth. Blithe Spirit playfully tells the story as Elvira tries to disrupt the marriage, with often time hilarious results.
Blithe Spirit tickets were popular for revivals on the West End and in Broadway in the ‘70s and ‘80s. In 2004, the play again played in the West End and has returned to Broadway in 2009.
