A drama professor named Rocco Landesman thought there should be a Broadway show based on The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. He thought that Roger Miller, a country singer and songwriter, was just the right person to create the songs for the musical.

Roger Miller was not immediately sold on doing the project. Broadway shows do not usually have country-style music. First, it took Rocco Landesman a whole year to convince Miller to give it a try. Then, it took about eighteen months for Miller to write the music. Finally, the show, named Big River (after the Mississippi River), was ready to be produced in New York.

John Goodman (probably best known for playing Dan Connor on the television series Roseanne) was cast as Huck Finn's father.

Big River opened on Broadway at the Eugene O'Neill Theater on April 25, 1985. Miller had nothing to worry about. The show was a smash hit! It ran for 1,005 performances and won seven Tony awards, including "best musical score," won by Roger Miller. When John Goodman left Big River, Roger Miller himself took over the role of Huck's father for about three months.

Big River, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a 2001 U.S. musical featuring both hearing and deaf performers.

The music and lyrics were written by Roger Miller, based on a book by William Hauptman, ultimately adapted from the novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn written by Mark Twain.

A faithful retelling of this Mark Twain classic, the production is inventive in its mixture of roles for hearing and deaf actors. Originating in the Deaf West Theatre, the production toured Broadway in 2003, and as of 2004, is slated to tour numerous cities across the U.S.

Did you ever wish you could leave everyday life behind and go on some incredible adventures? That's what Huckleberry Finn does in the book The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain.

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a sequel to The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. If you have read Tom Sawyer, you may remember Huckleberry ("Huck") as one of Tom's friends. At the beginning of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Huck runs away from home. He teams up with Jim, a runaway slave, and they travel down the Mississippi River on a raft. The excitement of the book is found in the people they meet, in the danger they find along their way, and in the fact that if Jim gets caught, he could be killed.

Many great books have been the basis for Broadway musicals. For example, the show Les Miserables is based on the book of the same title by Victor Hugo. The idea for Cats came from a set of poems by T. S. Eliot.
