August: Osage County
Few playwrights manage to touch a chord with audiences like Tracy Letts and few plays have made such an impression as his latest offering August: Osage County. Tickets to seeing this play are tickets to watching the unfolding of a powerful drama that involves the sticky webs of family relations, how they hold up in times of crisis and how they threaten to snap. At times funny, at times poignant, always thought-provoking, the play has been receiving accolades and praise from critics all across the country.
The play premieres at the Steppenwolf Theater and is directed by Anna Shapiro, a fellow member of the Steppenwolf Theater who has worked with Letts on a number of occasions. The cast includes a number of Steppenwolf's best including Amy Morton, Mariann Mayberry, Rick Snyder, Jeff Perry, Sally Murphy, Francis Guinan, Chelcie Ross, Michael Shannon and Deanna Dunagan. Letts wrote this piece specifically for this Steppenwolf ensemble and they do more than ample justice to it.

Show Biography - August: Osage County
|
Letts is possibly one of the most important playwrights on the theater scene today who has already chalked up a memorable number of hits and critically acclaimed features. Letts is perhaps best known for his play entitled Man From Nebraska, which was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in 2005. His other works include pieces like Bug and Killer Joe. Anna Shapiro, a well noted director also from the Steppenwolf ensemble has worked with Letts before, most notable she directed Man From Nebraska. When she speaks of Letts as a playwright, she distinguishes him as being someone who is more concerned with the politics of family and legacy, dealing with directly emotional characters.
In August: Osage County this is exactly what Letts offers us, glimpse into the life of the Westons who must now come together at the old homestead in Kansas after the patriarch of the family disappears, leaving behind a sick mother and number of unanswered questions. With a great deal of humor and emotion, Letts carries us through the struggles of each of these characters as they explore the many troubles of their past and hesitantly face a future that looks clouded and uncertain.
