Andrew's first tryst with musicals was "The Likes of us" which he wrote with lyricist Tim Rice. The musical was performed in 2005. Their second musical was "Joseph and the Amazing technicolor Dreamcoat" which was based on the Genesis. They presented it as a 15 minute pop cantata on March 1, 1968 at the Colet Court school. "The Times" gave it favorable reviews.
I 1970, Andrew and Tim Rice created, "Jesus Christ Superstar", a rock opera. It opened at the Mark Hellinger Theatre, New York on 12 October, 1971. The opera before being presented on roadway was initially released as an album. The recording featuring Deep Purple's Ian Gillan (as Jesus), Yvonne Elliman (as Mary Magdalene) and Murray Head (Judas), topped the U.S. Charts thrice. On 9 August 1972, the opera opened with Paul Nicholas (Jesus), Stephen Tate (Judas) and Dana Gillespie (Mary Magdalene). After eight years and 3,358 performances, it became the longest ever running musical in West End history.
Lloyd-Webber and Tim rice got back to the drawing board to write Evita. The musical is based on the Argentine Eva Peron and the rise to power of her husband, Juan Peron. The Broadway production opened on 25th September 1979 and was choreographed by Larry Fuller and directed by Harold Prince. Like "Jesus Christ Superstar", it was released as a concept album though it was released on WestEnd on June 21,1978. the musical ran for 1567 performances. All in all, it ran for ten successful years. Soon after Evita, Andrew and Rice parted ways.
