Andrea Chenier is the opera that tells the tragic love story of the namesake poet. The opera opens with servants preparing for a ball in pre-Revolutionary France. Gerard is introduced as an angry servant stewing in his misgivings as his father suffers after a life of hardship serving his French masters. A love triangle develops as Chenier and Madalena's love is interrupted by Gerard's long silent affection.
