The opera has been given a set up of the 1st century near Bethlehem. Amahl is a handicapped boy with a kind and beautiful heart. But he appears troublesome because of his habit of telling long stories , sometimes lies. This habit prevents his mother to believe him one evening when he tells her about an star "as big as a window". The same night, after hearing a knock at the door, his mother ask him to see. He is amazed to find three magnificently dressed kings. They told the mother and Amahl about their long journey and wish to give gifts to a extraordinary child. They wished to stay at their house and allowed by mother thinking about his child Amahl. She tries to entertain the kings properly. Later she tries to steal some of the gold out of feelings of being too poor and finding her child as beggar but is disappointed by the Kings' Page. When the kings see Amahl supporting his mother, they let her to keep gold with her as the Holy child won't be needing any wealth to build his kingdom. The mother wishes to send a gift after knowing child's greatness but finds helpless. Amahl offers his crutch for the Christ Child and as he gives he is healed. Out of extreme joy, Amahl leaves his mother and goes off with the three kings to see the child and give thanks for being healed.
Amahl and The Night Visitors has been broadcast from 1951 until 1966, on NBC on or around Christmas Eve. NBC authorized Menotti to write the opera. It was to be broadcast as either a special presentation or as an episode of an existing anthology series, like "Alcoa theater". It was presented as a Live show for many years. But it was recorded in video with a totally new cast in 1963. This new video version was presented from 1963 to 1966. After a long break, it again appeared in 1978, as a new production featuring Teresa Stratas as Amahl's mother. This production was filmed by NBC, partly on location in the Holy Land. Though it could not start an annual tradition like 1951 and 1963 versions did. 1951 cast recording is available now on compact disc. "Amahl" was first recorded in stereo in 1963.
