Show Biography - Aida
The tale of Aida, made famous by Verdi's 1871 opera, concerns an enslaved African princess, Aida, and her doomed love for the captain of the Egyptian guard, Radames, who is in turn desired by Aida's royal mistress, Amneris.
Heather Headley, in an acclaimed performance as the title character in Elton John & Tim Rice's "Aida," has just won the Drama Desk Award for Best Actress in a Musical. The awards were presented May 14, 2000 in a ceremony held at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts.
The story is, again simply, this: Pascal is Radames, an Egyptian warrior who wins against the Nubians. He brings home a pack of slaves, including Aida (Headley), who is the daughter of the Nubian king, and thus a princess. Radames falls in love with Aida and Aida with him. Meanwhile, plans for Radames' marriage to Amneris (Scott) continue. Then Aida's father, Amonasro (Tyrees Allen), is captured by the Egyptians. Plotting to help him escape, Radames is caught. Radames and Aida must die, but Amneris shows remarkable mercy toward the young lovers: She agrees to have them buried alive in the same tomb. The story is framed by the chance encounter of a modern-day Radames and Aida at the Met.
"Disney's done it again!" says the New Yorker about "Aida," Disney's newest blockbuster musical and the show that Time Magazine calls "Broadway's next monster hit!"
