After Miss Julie takes the 1888 August Strindberg play Miss Julie and moves the location from a count's estate in Sweden to an English country house and the time from midsummer nigh in 1894 to the night of the British Labour Party's landside election victory in July 1945. The play After Miss Julie was first a movie on BBC Two that first aired on November 4, 1995. At the same time she feels trapped by the power bestowed upon her by her wealth, leaving her unsure and perpetually unhappy.
She finds a particular attraction to John, the valet. He is a few years older and has seen the world while trying to find his own way somewhere in the world, yet has returned to his station as a servant. He may or may not have true feelings for Miss Julie, but certainly would like to take advantage of her wealth to open and operate a hotel.

The third character in this study of social norms, expectations, and unrest is Christine. She is another servant, betrothed to John. Unlike John though, she is happy with her station in life. The impending marriage between the two servants is not a strong blissful one and may even be an arrangement of convenience between the two.
After Miss Julie focuses on the relationship between Miss Julie and John and its very struggle for power. The power of the each sex, the authority of a certain position and the freedom of another, and the power of thinking for oneself is explored in the dialogue and furtive and flirtatious glances between the two.
The stage version of the play is making its way to Broadway now, six years later. Mark Brokaw will take up directing duties, Sienna Miller will portray Miss Julie, and the American debut of this story is being produced by the Roundabout Theatre Company in association with Sonia Friedman Productions, and Ostar Productions.
After Miss Julie will play at the American Airlines Theatre for a limited engagement that officially debuts on October 22 (the preview begins September 18) and ends on December 6, 2009.
