The play is set in 1775, a difficult period of time for England and France. Like the book, the play is set during the French Revolution; it is the telling of one of the most captivating love stories in one of human history's most petrifying times. The musical's score represents the emotional fireworks that endlessly blow up throughout the 2-hour show, which includes life-threatening schemes, numerous betrayals, secret designs, total political upheaval, mob violence, unconditional love, courage in the face of danger and human sacrifice. Dr. Manette is released after 17 years from the French Bastille and must be brought back from insanity by his daughter, Lucie. They meet exiled French aristocrat, Charles Darnay, who Lucie marries, and drunken cynic, Sydney Carton. Family secrets and political deception bring Lucie and Manette back to Paris. The musical finds an improbable hero in Carton, who, at the pinnacle of the Reign of Terror, makes an astonishing sacrifice in the name of love.
Show Biography - A Tale Of Two Cities
A Tale of Two Cities is the second historical novel written by Charles Dickens in 1859. The plot focuses on the years leading up to the French Revolution and ends in the Jacobin Reign of Terror. The story talks a little about Dr. Alexandre Manette's imprisonment in 1757, but the story's timeline starts in 1775 and ends with Sydney Carton's execution 5 years later. The book's opening ("It was the best of times, it was the worst of times…") and closing ("It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest that I go to than I have ever known.") are some of the most famous lines in English literature. The book deals mainly with the story of Charles Darnay and Carton; they look alike, but have very different personalities. Darnay is an amorous French aristocrat and Carton is a sarcastic English barrister; they both end up falling hard for the same woman, Lucie Manette. The book's title imitates how the setting changes from London to Paris and back.
