A Little Night Music
A Little Night Music is a musical written by Stephen Sondheim in conjunction with Hugh Wheeler (who wrote the book) in 1973. The play is based on the Ingmar Bergman movie Smile of a Summer Night, released in 1955. The play follows six characters as jealousies tear apart relationships and put them back together in a different order. Tickets to A Little Night Music are great for those looking for a little humor and a little scheming romance.
The story begins with Fredrik Egerman, a lawyer, and his much younger bride Anne. Anne refuses to have sex with him that night and has been protecting her virginity since the marriage began. She promises to give in to his desires soon. Meanwhile Fredrik has run into an old lover, Desiree Armfeldt, She is an actress obsessed with her glamorous world to such an extent that she has sent her daughter, Fredika, to live with her mother, Madame Armfeldt. A Little Night Music's story is foreshadowed by the grandmother as she tells the granddaughter that the summer night smiles three times, on the young, the fools, and the old.
A Little Night Music tickets are compelling as Desiree's lover, Count Carl-Magnus Malcolm enters the picture and schemes to catch Fredrik in an extramarital affair with his own mistress. Fredrik's son, Henrik, contemplates life in the seminary and wards off the advances of Anne's maid Petra. A plan is hatched, involving a party at Madame Armfeldt's estate. In the end the fools revive their romance, a young couple escapes the clutches of manipulation, and Madame once again sees the summer night sky smile upon her.
The first production debuted on Broadway in 1973 at the Shubert Theatre. A Little Night Music tickets sold for the next year and a half, finally closing the curtain after 601 shows.
