In the 1953 Bronx, 2 young lovers, Janey Hurley and Ralph Halloran, decide they don't want a large, costly wedding; besides, the bride's family needs that money to save their family business. A dinner with the groom's well-off family, however, makes the bride's father feel a sense of pride, which causes him to agree to give his life's savings to an extravagant wedding complete with a massive guest list. The characters' relationships are stressed almost to the breaking point because of the expensive bridesmaids' bouquets, cake layers and other such details.

Based on the 1956 movie(distributed by Warner Brothers and it was a Turner Entertainment production), The Catered Affair written by Gore Vidal and the 1955 teleplay by Paddy Chayefsky, it's set in the 1953 Bronx. This show marks Bucchino's very first Broadway production. The musical, which is directed by Tony Award winner John Doyle, will start its Broadway preview run on March 25, 2008 and will open at a Jujamcyn theatre on April 17. Every role has been announced except the part of the groom in this marriage-minded musical. Its cast includes Fierstein (playing the uncle of the bride), Tom Wopat (playing the father of the bride) and Faith Prince (playing the mother of the bride) and Leslie Kritzer (playing the bride); joining them will be Philip Hoffman, Katie Klaus, Heather MacRae, Lori Wilner and Kristine Zbornik. Before going to Broadway, the musical was the first of the 2007-08 season at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego, CA.
