The Mikado
Background- The Mikado, also known as The Town of Titipu, is a comic opera divided into two
acts. It opened in the year 1885 in London at the Savoy Theatre for 672 performances. The music for the opera has been composed by Arthur Sullivan and libretto by W. S. Gilbert. Both of them have worked altogether in fourteen operatic collaborations. It became one of the longest running opera during that time. The success of the opera instigated 150 more companies to produce the same opera. The Mikado till today is one of the most frequently performed Savoy Opera. and is one of the most often played musical theater pieces in history.
Although the play is a comedy one but it usually deals with themes of cruelty and death and it is this themes which works for the play. But the serious subject matter is treated in such a way that the audience finds it comical.
