Sweeney Todd is a legendary character who has inspired many a plays and literary works. Sometimes thought to be a fictional barber and serial killer, the character appeared in various English-language works starting in the mid-19th century. His victims had their throats cut and their bodies were disposed of in meat pies which were sold to the public. According to modern researchers, a man of this name commenced murdering 'customers' in 1785 and was eventually hanged some 17 years later. His female pie shop collaborator poisoned herself in prison.
Sweeney Todd first appeared in a story called "The String of Pearls: A Romance" that was probably written by Thomas Prest who created a number of other gruesome villains. The British playwright Christopher Bond wrote a 1973 play titled Sweeney Todd. In 1979, Stephen Sondheim wrote and composed the musical theater play, "Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barber of Fleet Street," based on the Bond play. He called it a "musical thriller" and "virtually an opera". This modern example originally appeared on Broadway in 1979 starring Angela Lansbury and Len Cariou. A smaller scale revival took place in 1989 at Circle in the Square, starring Bob Gunton and Beth Fowler.
In 2005 the musical was revived, directed by John Doyle. The revival was much praised for its reinterpretation of the original musical. Doyle's stripped down his version to a sparse set and a minimal cast. The show was put on as it being performed by a group in an insane asylum. This revival also featured no orchestra or set changes. All the music was performed by actors on stage playing various instruments. This version starred Michael Cerveris and Patti LuPone, it was critically acclaimed, topping many critics best of 2005 lists for Broadway musicals.
A BBC television drama version with screenplay written by Joshua St Johnston and starring Ray Winstone and Essie Davis was broadcast on BBC One on 3 January 2006. Sam Mendez is set to direct a film based on the story in the near future.
