Edward Albee has done gain what he does best, exploring the unexplored side of everyday relationships. In Seascape he focuses on a middle aged couple who are at the turning point of their later life. They have to decide on the course to follow for the remaining part of their lives. The children are grown ups now and the couple have done their part. The debate about life thereafter is sombre and comic at the same time. Set in the serene surroundings of a quiet beach it is an exploration into marriage and relationships.
Frances Sternhagen and George Grizzard star as Nancy and Charlie. Nancy is full of dreams for adventure while Charlie wants to retire, at least for the time being. The wit flows when they meet another couple in a similar dilemma-Sarah and Leslie. Then there is a meaningful interaction between the similarly stranded couples. Elizabeth Marvel and Frederick Weller are the newly arrived couple. As the play progresses the couples come over their fear of other life forms and become friends.

The direction by Mark Lamos is rare stuff. The lizard costumes are by Catherine Zuber are terrific. Frederick Weller delivers another fine performance. Leslie believably lizardlike. Their movements are wonderful imitations of the reptilian originals.
