Oliver
Background- Oliver is the story of a small boy, who is later sold to a Dunstable undertaker, his only crime that he asked for more dinner at the orphanage. After that escapes to London where he is taken in by Fagin and also join his gang of child pickpockets. He is wrongly accused of a theft and is taken under police custody, later he meets a more kindly gentleman who takes him in his shelter. But is kidnapped by Bill Sikes. After some time he is freed from their clutches. In the end Oliver gets to know that he has a family also.
The play Oliver! is a British musical. Lionel Bart has written the lyrics and the music has also been composed by him. Later this play has also been made into a number of films under the direction of many notable directors.
Oliver! first appeared in the year 1960 in West End. The show was very popular and as a result ran for long time. It also launched the careers of many child actors, including Davy Jones, later of The Monkees, Phil Collins, later of Genesis, and Tony Robinson, later playing the role of Baldrick in the television series Black Adder. The rock star Steve Marriott of The Small Faces also appeared in the earlier musicals, later he also played the role of Dodger in the West End.
Oliver is a musical play which is based upon the novel Oliver Twist written by Charles Dickens. Not only this, this play became one of the stage hit and eventually was the first musical adaptation of any Dickens novel. It is due to such reasons that it attracted such immediate attention. There were not many musical adaptation of Dickens novels, but only two, which were television adaptations of A Christmas Carol of the 50's, but it was not that successful stage musical, and also it was not that dramatic as the story of Oliver Twist. There was another reason for its wide popularity and that is the revolving stage set, which had been designed by Sean Kenny.

 In the year 1960, the original production of Oliver! opened in the New Theatre in London. Theater is now known as the Noel Coward Theatre. The original cast of the production were Ron Moody as Fagin, Georgia Brown as Nancy, and Barry Humphries in a small role as a humorous undertaker. Keith Hamshere (the original Oliver) is presently the Hollywood still photographer while Martin Horsey, who acted as Dodger is an accomplished a actor/ director and is also the author of the play "L'Chaim".
In the year 1962, the musical for the play first appeared in the U.S. on a national tour, while in the year 1963, its first Broadway production opened in the Imperial Theater. The musical play is somewhat different from Dickens's original novel, as some of the portions has been considerably simplified to suit the musical. For example, Fagin has been given a more comic character, than the villainous one and many portions of the latter part of the story has been left completely.
