The story revolves around the two young teenagers who are left with no choice other than living with their intimidating grandma (played by Irene Worth) as their widowed father leaves south in search of a job to earn a livelihood and especially to settle the medical costs incurred due to the ailments of his late wife. Such a turn of events in the family exposes the boys to a not-so-favorable experience that take place when they spend time with the grandma and Aunt Bella (another important character played by Ruehl).
Ms. Irene Worth does good justification to her role as the terrifying Grandma Kurnitz. In the story, she is an immigrant to the United States and runs a candy store over which she conveniently resides with her family. She is very frightening and personifies a steely monstrousness that creates a very hostile environment not just for the boys but also for Aunt Bella who also lives in the same household. But unlike Grandma, Bella is bubbly and amicable and her activities actually place her on par with the boys rather than as an elderly family member. Her behavior is also suggestive of a supposed imbalance in her mental capacity though one is not called out in clear terms in the play but just left to the imagination of the audience. She is very fond of movies and always expresses her desire to see the happy endings in them. She mostly is on a collision course with grandma and craves for soul-wise intimacy that has been denied to her due to neglect.
As different from Simon's other plays that usually have a family set up only too roseate to be true, this one showcases a family that is not a safe haven for its members but is made up of eccentric characters that do not gel. Though the characters of grandma and aunt are remarkable in the memory of the audience, the center theme revolves around the boys and their discoveries and realization of the truths in certain things that they had heard earlier. Amongst all performance Bella's as played by Ruehl definitely casts a glow over the play.
