Living Out's central character is certainly Ana Hernandez who, along with her Husband Bobby and one of their sons, had escaped from strife torn El Salvador. They were compelled to leave one of their sons under the care of Ana's grandmother. Ana and Bobby settle in Los Angeles along with their son. They are still in the process of attaining legality as immigrants. The construction jobs that Bobby begins taking up from time to time are not enough to support the family and also to bring their other son to America. Under these circumstances, Ana – who was a trainee dentist in El Salvador – decides to work as a Nanny. Bob is unwilling but concedes for the time being i.e. till they get legal status and he begins to earn sufficiently. The two non-working women Ana approaches first for work - and is refused - are quite as comical as annoying. Their periodic meetings and rigmarole in the neighborhood park make for some really funny scenes. More laughter is caused by the satirical dialogues between the two nannies (also from Latin America) who are hired by the aforesaid two women. The nannies also come together in the same park (where their employers meet) and their conversations center around their bosses. The author has ingeniously used these four characters for ridiculing the vague affectations of the housewives of so-called modern American society.
Ana is finally hired by Nancy and Richard Robin – both lawyers by profession. For acquiring the job, she is obliged to lie to the couple that both of her sons are in El Salvador (and, therefore, she is free to devote most of her time to the couple's son). Richard, a public defender, is rather low paid being impractical by nature. He rues leaving his son under a nanny's care. Here the author has brilliantly portrayed parallels between the two male characters – Bob and Richard. Irrespective of their social status, both of them face similar dilemmas. They do no want their wives to work as this results in their children getting ignored. But both of them are helpless because of their financial concerns. Based on these characters and circumstances, the author takes the action forward that culminates in a touching end.
Award winning playwright Lisa Loomer has certainly scored over many of her contemporaries as far as characterization is concerned. She has drawn the characters that are thoroughly believable. Most of the spectators have been able to identify with them. None of the characters is absolute white or absolute black. Not even the two haughty homemakers who do appear a bit too annoying. The author also deserves the credit for penning sharp dialogues that smoothly convey the intended meaning to the audience with no scope for chaos. Though comedy is her forte, Lisa Loomer has proved beyond doubt that she is equally adept at arousing pathos. Without any efforts to sermonize, she has raised some pertinent questions. However, perhaps quite prudently, she has evaded providing clear answers.
