La Traviata
Background- La Traviata is the story of a Violetta, a doomed courtesan, is one of the most popular operas of Verdi.
La Traviata has been composed by none other than the famous Giuseppe Fortunino Francesco Verdi. The opera is divided into four acts. The story has been taken from the novel La dame aux Camélias by Alexandre Dumas, fils, which was published in the year 1848. The opera was first staged at the Teatro la Fenice in Venice, on March 6, in the year 1853. The literal meaning of "La traviata" is The Woman Who Strayed. The opera became very famous during that and till date are very popular. According to Opera America, "La Traviata is the third most performed opera in North America, behind only Madama Butterfly and La bohème". In the year 1982, the opera was turned into a film which was directed by Franco Zeffirelli. The film featured
Teresa Stratas, Plácido Domingo and Cornell MacNeil. Even the story of Camille was also adapted from the same novel. In the year 2001, the film "Moulin Rouge!" by Baz Luhrmann was also based on the same story.
The backdrop of the story is set in Paris and in around viscinity. The main characters of the play are Violetta Valery, courtesan (soprano), Alfredo Gérmont, young nobleman (tenor), Giorgio Gérmont, his father (baritone).  Violetta, the central female character, is a courtesan who dies of consumption. She is in love with Alfredo and this changes her life for ever. She also sacrifices her love for him when she abandons him to save his sister's engagement.
Giuseppe Fortunino Francesco Verdi was one of the most influential Italian Romantic composer, mainly of opera. Nobody could equaled his talent till date. His works are so popular and famous, till this day that they are frequently performed in opera houses throughout the world. His works has even crossed the boundaries of the genre. What's more some of his themes have long ago got rooted in popular culture - such as "La donna è mobile" from Rigoletto and "Libiamo ne' lieti calici" from La traviata. His masterworks still predominate the standard repertoire, since it caters to the taste of the common folk. He woks has a tendency to shift towards melodrama. Oberto was his first opera , which was produced by Milan's La Scala. The opera was highly successful. This opera also led Verdi to sign a contract with Bartolomeo Merelli, whe was quite impressed by the . Verdi signed up with him for two more works.
His second opera, Un Giorno di Regno, was a flop, because during that time he lost his wife and children. In 1842 Nabucco made Verdi famous. After that numerous operas followed after that, which included I Lombardi (1843) and Ernani (1844). But his most important and original early operas is Macbeth (1847), which was a beautiful operistic adaptation by his favorite dramatist William Shakespeare. I Lombardi, was his first work in the French grand-opera style.
