The story is set in a Moravian village in the 19th century. The background of the characters is thus- the only descendants of the mill-owners family are the second wife of one of his sons, Jenufa the daughter of that son, Steva her cousin and Laca, Steva's half brother. According to custom, the mill will go to Steva and the other two must fend for themselves. Under these already difficult circumstances, we find that Jenufa is not only in love with Steva but she is also carrying his illegitimate child. Laca is in love with Jenufa but frustrated by the attention she pays to Steva.
When the opera opens, Jenufa is worried sick that Steva has been drafted into the army. However he soon arrives, completely drunk with a gang of soldiers. He boasts of his prowess with women and pulls Jenufa into a dance. Unable to stand this rowdiness any longer, Jenufa's stepmother intervenes and says that the two will not be able to marry until Steva can stay sober for a year. Steva is unaware of Jenufa's pregnancy and behaves casually. Later Laca enters and tries to convince Jenufa of Steva's bad character but she is unrelenting and in a rage, Laca slashes Jenufa's cheeks.

Jenufa's stepmother then approaches Laca who reacts with disgust, saying he cannot marry her if she has a child. The stepmother says the child is dead and Laca agrees. In order to ensure the success of the plan, the stepmother takes the child and drowns it, telling Jenufa that the baby died in its sleep. However the truth comes out on Laca and Jenufa's wedding day when the body is discovered in the stream. The stepmother confesses, saying she thought it was the best thing to do.
