Andrea Bocelli (born September 22, 1958 in Tuscany, Italy) is a singer. A operatic tenor, Bocelli may be best known to a general audience for his major hit "Con te partiro", which he also performed as a duet with Sarah Brightman and the London Symphony Orchestra. During that time, Bocelli was afforded the opportunity to study with his childhood idol, the legendary Italian tenor Franco Corelli--and Italy soon lost a lawyer. Bocelli gave up his practice, and played piano bars at night (performing standards by Frank Sinatra and Edith Piaf) to support his wife and children while he studied his craft. In 1992, Italian rock star Zucchero asked Bocelli to duet with him on a demo tape of "Miserere," a duet intended for Luciano Pavarotti, who whereupon also became one of Bocelli's mentors after hearing the young singer's voice on the tape. Bocelli gained even more notice when he went on the road with Zucchero, performing the Pavarotti part for the live renditions of "Miserere."
Bocelli signed with Sugar soon after; in 1996, after a series of opera albums released in Italy, Bocelli recorded a pop duet with Andrew Lloyd Webber protégé Sarah Brightman. The single, "Time To Say Goodbye," became a huge pop hit throughout Europe; in fact, it stands as Germany's all-time best-seller. That same year, Sugar reached an agreement with PolyGram, and Romanza became Bocelli's international debut LP, reaching the top of the pop charts throughout the Western world. The singer continued to pursue his operatic muse: 1998's Aria: The Opera Album is one of the most successful classical albums of all time...and it, too, reached the pop album charts throughout Europe and in the States.
With the release of Sogno in 1999, featuring a duet single with Celine Dion called "The Prayer," Bocelli is poised for pop superstardom unlike any opera tenor before him.
