Alcina is an opera that was composed by George Frideric Handel for his first season at the Royal Opera House at Covent Garden. It was written at a time in Handel's career in London when he faced competition from a rival company and a resulting financial slum. It premiered on April 16, 1735, and the plot is taken from Ludovico Ariosto's Orlando furioso, an epic poem set in the time of Charlemagne's wars against Islam. The plot of Alcina concerns the sixth and seventh cantos of Orlando furioso, which tells of the knight, Ruggiero, enslaved by the sorceress Alcina. Alcina, a sorceress, is responsible for Ruggiero's infidelity. Bradamante, Ruggiero's fiancée, and her companion Melisso rescue Ruggiero by breaking Alcina's enchantments, in the process freeing her former lovers whom she had turned into beasts, rocks, waves, and sand. It is a brilliant way of disposing of lovers who have ceased to amuse her. The second couple, Morgana, Alcina's sister and Oronte, Alcina's servant, also must overcome the obstacle of jealousy as they find their way to true love.
