The duo White Stripes come from Detroit and consist of the pair Jack White on vocals, guitar, keyboards, and piano, and Meg White on drums, backing vocals, and tambourine. The White Stripes, who formed in 1997, have quickly emerged as one of the front-runners in the rock/alternative music scene and consistently applauded by critics. In June 1999, The White Stripe's first LP, The White Stripes, was released and described later by Jack as "...really angry...the most raw, the most powerful, and the most Detroit-sounding record we've made." Their video for "Feel In Love With A Girl" won 3 MTV Video Music Awards including Breakthrough Video, Best Special Effects, and Best Editing, and was also nominated for Video of the Year. In April, The White Stripes released Elephant, and topped the UK LP charts for 2 weeks. It was also certified gold and eventually certified platinum.

In July, several concert appearances had to be rescheduled after Jack was in an automobile accident and was left with a shattered index finger. The White Stripe's video for "Seven Nation Army" won a MTV Video Music Award for Best Editing and was also nominated for Best Group Video, Best Rock Video, and Best Special Effects. Critics in Rolling Stone have named the White Stripes as the Best Rock Artist. The White Stripes won 2 Grammy Awards for Best Alternative Music Album for Elephant and Best Rock Song ("Seven Nation Army") and were nominated for Album of the Year and Best Rock Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group in 2004. The White Stripe also performed at the ceremony. The video for "The Hardest Button To Button" was nominated for 4 MTV Video Music Awards including Best Direction, Best Special Effects, Best Editing, and Breakthrough Video.
