The Spinners were originally known as the Domingoes. The band's original lineup consisted of Bobbie Smith, Pervis Jackson, George W. Dixon, Billy Henderson, and Henry Fambrough. The band kept playing at locals clubs and joints until they were discovered four years later by producer Harvey Fuqua. He began recording with the group and renamed them the Spinners for his own label, Tri-Phi Records. The band released their first single, "That's What Girls Are Made For." the song became a top ten R&B hit when it released in 1961. The release of the song was followed by the departure of Dixon, he was replaced by Edgar "Chico" Edwards. The next few years were not at all fruitful for the band, they released some failed singles, to add to their problems Tri-Phi records was taken over by Motown in mid 60's. Sadly, Motown never payed attention to the group and did not get a chance to grow, at the same time Edwards left the band and was replaced by G.C. Cameron.
The Spinners are considered the greatest soul outfit of the early '70s. Their songs laid the foundation for the future sound of Philly soul. The band is actually from Detroit and thats where they came together in the late '50s. In the mid 60's when they became part of the larger Motown Records, they were ignored by the company. Even though they delivered a hit like "It's a Shame" the label kept ignoring the band. Motown eventually discarded the Spinners in 1972.

The band's problems didn't seem to end, they were not being picked up any label and their talents were going unnoticed. The Spinners had a new face in lead singer Phillipe Wynne. It seemed that the Spinners would fade away and would never break into the big league. But they somehow managed to sign with Atlantic Records. Here they started working with producer Thom Bell. With his guidance and support the band developed their unique sound, one that revolved around Wynne's amazing voice range.
The Spinners recorded a number of classics in the period between 1972 and 1977. Some that deserve special mention are "I'll Be Around," "Could It Be I'm Fallin in Love," "Mighty Love," "Ghetto Child," "Then Came You," "Games People Play," and "The Rubberband Man." Wynne departed in 1977 and began to concentrate on a solo career. The Spinners had a slew of hits over the next few years but they will always be remembered for their fantastic contribution to soul music in the mid 70's.
