All through their history, The Philadelphia Orchestra has launched an unprecedented number of important works like American premieres, Barber's Violin Concerto, Mahler's 'Symphony of a Thousand,' Rachmaninoff's Symphonic Dances, Schoenberg's Gurrelieder, and Stravinsky's Rite of Spring. Their famous tour history consists of a number of milestone events. In 1936 the Orchestra embarked on a transcontinental tour, in 1949 they toured Great Britain, they were the first American orchestra to do so after World War II, and in 1973 they became the first American orchestra to perform in the People's Republic of China. The Orchestra also has to their credit many media firsts; they were the first symphonic orchestra to make electrical recordings and also the first to own a commercially sponsored radio broadcast. The Philadelphia Orchestra was also the first to work on the soundtrack of a feature film and perform on a national television broadcast. With changing times, the Orchestra also changed accordingly; they became the first important orchestra to give a live cybercast of a concert on the Internet.

The Philadelphia Orchestra performs above 300 concerts and delights more than one million music lovers worldwide in a year not only through concerts but also through publications, recordings, and broadcasts. Apart from education and community partnership programs, the Philadelphia Orchestra presents a winter subscription season every year. The Orchestra also performs a succession of concerts every year at New York's Carnegie Hall, performing some of their applauded concerts from Philadelphia.

During summer, the Orchestra organizes an outdoor season at The Mann Center for the Performing Arts, free concerts in local neighborhoods, a three-week residency at Saratoga Performing Arts Center in upstate New York, and a yearly residency at the Bravo!

The Orchestra since their formation has had only six music directors and the seventh one Christoph Eschenbach was appointed the music director in September 2003. The Philadelphia Orchestra under the able and dynamic leadership of Eschenbach hopes to achieve greater heights.
