Grand Rapids' brightest young musical talents aged between 20 and 26 formed the Orphan. Although, the band is categorized under 'hardcore' but their music is not limited, they include so much more. The band after formation released their first EP 'There's Only One Thing Left To' on Mos Eisley's Records and embarked on an intensive tour to support the same. The band played weekend shows around the Great Lakes region in order to promote their debut effort. After the release of the album, a couple of national record labels showed interest towards the band and was also supported by nationally touring artists. The band self released their debut LP 'The Tragedy of Giving Up' while continuing to enthrall fans in Midwest on weekends. The band which had signed with an upcoming Michigan indie label, Lakehouse Records and which was supposed to have released the LP closed shop, hence the band self released the LP. After the release of the LP, the band hit the road in support of the same.

The band has been highly influenced by acts like Killswitch Engage, 36 Crazyfists, Meshuggah, Candiria, Reflux, Blood Has Been Shed, Lamb of God, Zao, All That Remains, Glassjaw, Chimaira, Sevendust, Atreyu, Soilwork, Reggie & The Full Effect, Onesidezero, Snapcase, Aiden, God Forbid, The Agony Scene, Unearth, Lo-Pro, From Autumn To Ashes, Poison The Well, Still Remains, Story Of The Year, It Dies Today, Misery Signals, Twelve Tribes, Caliban, Byzantine, Darkest Hour, Devin Townsend, As I Lay Dying and Dane Cook.
